Finally: Netflix has greenlit season two of Stranger Things is in the works, set for a 2017 release date. Executive Producers Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen and creators the Duffer Brothers will all return for the second season … but how about Eleven?
All we have is this teaser trailer with the titles of the nine episodes for season two, which is one episode longer than season one:
- Madmax
- The Boy Who Came Back To Life
- The Pumpkin Patch
- The Palace
- The Storm
- The Pollywog
- The Secret Cabin
- The Brain
- The Lost Brother
And that it’s set in 1984. But if you want to know more, the Duffer Brothers have revealed some hints in an interview with Entertainment Weekly and The Hollywood Reporter:
1. Most of the cast will return, especially the boys. But no confirmation on Eleven (but we won’t bet against it)
Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Joyce (Winona Ryder) and Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) are confirmed to be back for season two, but the brothers remain coy on Eleven: “We leave that up in the air”. Brenner (Matthew Modine) and Barb (Shannon Purser) … are also unconfirmed (hard to see Barb come back though). There will also be new characters, but they haven’t been cast. That said, the brothers have some names in mind, and with Ryder in season one, who knows which 80s teen idol will return?
2. It’s inspired by James Cameron
Cameron, of course, was the guy who did a fantastic job with Aliens after Ridley Scott, so would serve as great inspiration on how to move something forward without neglecting its past. Said Matt Duffer: “I know movie sequels get a lot of s—, but the ones we look up to aspire to pivot and do something different. There’s Temple of Doom, Aliens, Terminator 2. I guess a lot of this is James Cameron. But he’s brilliant. And I think one of the reasons his sequels are as successful as they are is he makes them feel very different without losing what we loved about the original. So I think we kinda looked to him and what he does and tried to capture a little bit of the magic of his work.”
3. The Upside Down will be back
What’s Stranger Things without the Upside Down, really? But that’s not all, the town, Hawkins, will still be a setting for the show, but there’s also going to be broader scope to explore some new places.
And now, sing it with me, with feeling!
