Workshop Wednesday: Making Kustom Ork Walkers from Deffkoptas

My Big Mek gears have been going in overdrive recently, with the Sentikan/Kantinel mods, and now these: Kustom Ork Walkers made from the Deffkoptas from assault on black reach minis.

I had extra legs after making my Uni-kans, and I never really did like the Deffkopta aesthetic (don’t ask me why, for some reason it doesn’t feel believable enough for me) so I ended up making my own Kustomr Ork Walkers from the Assault on Black Reach Deffkoptas (counting as warbuggies).

How’d I make them? Read on…

First I cut up the koptas to make sure that no kopta traces were left. That means more more rotors, no more tail fins, etc (even though I kept the exhaust).

Then adding random bits to cover up the hackjob I did. These were mainly extra engines or other details like sleeping rolls, sacks, that sort of thing.

Since I had extra legs (and ball hip joints) from my Uni-kan build, I figured I might as well use them here. I stuck the ball joints at the side of the kopta, allowing the legs to be glued in place later.

After that it was a quick prime black, followed by a tin bitz basecoat for all the metals. The silvers were then drybrushed with boltgun metal, while the gold/bronzes were drybrushed with brazen brass.

I wanted a simple but good paint scheme, which is why I (like a lot of people) abused the GW Washes, in this case Devlan mud. A basecoat of all the other colours was then laid down (Mordian Blue, Snot Green, Iyanden Darksun, Dark flesh, and various browns) before I did some weathering on the metal by painting/stippling mithril silver on the metallic edges. Last but not least a simple but thorough wash in Devlan mud.

Tadah!

Stay tuned next week for more buildy goodness in Workshop Wednesday, and feel free to ask any questions!
