Minis Week in Review: June 5th
Hordes and 40k continue to take the front seat this week with upcoming releases previewed by Privateer Press, as well as more Spearhead info than you could shake a stick at.
We start off with the sculpt for PP’s very first Hordes Warlock (the lessers don’t count) Lord Carver (bmmd, esq, III). We had seen his concept art previously, but here we have him in all of his bacony glory. It’ pretty accurate to the concept art. His sculpt is ok, but I’m a big fan of the little details like the boar-snout bracers (check the rotation on PP’s page and his giant cleaver of doom).
Privateer also released a sneak of Everblight’s new lesser, the Stinger. It’s interesting to guess what it does. Maybe a short spray attack? A one-shot physical attack? It might be 2 or 3 points, but at 3 it better be pretty awesome.
In order to support the release of Hordes coming out soon, Tabletop Gaming News has started a Hordes Battle Challenge on their site. This looks pretty fun, and especially so since it’s a run-up to the release of Hordes. I might actually join if I have the time.

I also have to link to this super awesome article on customizing protectorate warjacks on Bell of Lost Souls because really it’s one of the best articles I’ve seen regarding customizing PP models. I think that the models are definitely recognizable as Crusaders, and well they’re gorram awesome that’s what they are. As a group, I think PP players tend to lean towards stock models as much as possible, but it’s these little flourishes that bring an army to life. I am actually tempted to try something similar for my Khador Jacks.
Games-Workshop.com seems to have turned one (I wonder what it would be like when HBG turns one), and it looks like they’re making free shipping permanent as a way to make their anniversary. Not only that, but 8th Edition is less than 2 weeks away, and Bell of Lost Souls also seems to have a sneak on some of their new accessories. I have to say the templates are probably the prettiest and most detailed templates I’ve ever seen.
Until then, we will have to amuse ourselves with the new Spearhead rules that are out. Not that most of us are complaining, mind (even if GW seems to be promoting heavy mech use quite a bit). We’ve got Grav Tank Tactics, as well as suggestions on how to use the new Spearhead formations. We’ve also got some free scenarios from GW, and free stuff is always good.
Lastly but certainly not least, Studio Mcvey have come up with a new resin mini, Y’sala and Darkness. As usual, it is horrendously pretty and I would love to be able to get my hand on it one day, together with the skill in doing it justice.
That’s it for this week. How do find the new beasts for Hordes, and especially the new Minions models? Is more mech (with Spearhead) a good or a bad thing?
