The Road to Gencon 2011: Day 0

Gencon is literally just around the corner! In fact it’s probably started for a certain lucky (or incredibly busy) few, what with it being Wednesday night over at Indy right now. Unfortunately we at HBG were unable to head to Gencon this year, but we’re lucky enough to have Kuen-Kuen, our own special Gen Con correspondent to be sending us all the info that he can! So… without further ado….

Hi everyone! My name is Kuen-Kuen and I am a Singaporean tabletop hobbyist, but my geekery often spills over into departments like board games, RPGs, comics… you name it. I will be doing some guest coverage of Gencon Indy for Here Be Geeks over the next few days, so check back in for my updates!

I’ve arrived in Indianapolis and am just getting settled in to my hotel. The second leg of my flight was a lot of fun, because about 40% of the plane was fellow Gencon attendees. The buzz of excitement was tangible in the cabin.

I met quite a few people on the journey, all very friendly. One of them, a painter, offered me a ride from the airport to my hotel, which I thankfully took.

In my bags I have just the tiniest amount of gaming equipment (50pts of Protectorate for Warmachine, and an almost-compete set of GUARD for Monsterpocalpyse), but the sheer amount of things there are to do here means that I don’t have to spend my entire time playing miniatures.

Right now, I’m on my way to the Convention Center for the first time for ticket pickups and some pre-opening exploration, and then dinner.

  1. Very cool. Gamers are some of the nicest people 🙂 I have to miss Gencon this year too but since you play warmachine you should totally check out the scenario my husband and his friends (GRiPT Games) are running called “The Wall.” I watched them run it a bit at Hoosiercon & it was cool but they’ve made some awesome new stuff special for Gencon. I think this is where the info for it is online: http://www.circlecitygamers.com/2011/06/14/gript-games-cryx-wall-update/

  2. Kimberly,

As a matter of fact, I had bought tickets for The Wall about a full month ago. I just played my game today (managed to win a silver prize, yay!), and it was a lot of fun. Well written scenario with beautiful terrain and miniatures.

I don’t think I have them on my Saturday recap (when Kakita posts it), but I definitely plan on mentioning how fun The Wall was.

  3. Hey KK. Greg of GRiPT Games here. I was the guy you played in the scenario. Thanks for the game. I really enjoyed it. Seeing how well the table was received has inspired me to change up and make a Legion table to go with the Cryx table next year. In addition, we’re already planning a much larger event to run at Gencon next year. Hope to see you there.
