Game subscription service Xbox Game Pass launches Jun 1

Call it a “Netflix for games” if you like. Digital gaming subscription service Xbox Game Pass launches on Jun 1, Microsoft announced yesterday. There’s an added benefit for Xbox Live Gold members: You can start your 14-day trial of the service right now.

Xbox Game Pass gives access to more than 100 Xbox One and Backward Compatible Xbox 360 games on your Xbox One. The service costs S$14.90 a month, and games at launch include Halo 5: Guardians, Payday 2, NBA 2K16, and LEGO Batman. Shooters such as the BioShock trilogy, Gears of War 1-3, Perfect Dark Zero and Borderlands are also included. New games will be added each month, Microsoft said.

Subscribers to the new service can also purchase Xbox One games in the catalogue – including add-ons – at a discount.

“NETFLIX FOR GAMES”

Xbox Game Pass joins EA Access in the digital subscription space. It’s a great concept, especially if you’re not into chasing the newest games all the time, or would like to revisit some classics. We probably won’t see EA games in Xbox Game Pass (unless Xbox gets enough critical mass that EA won’t mind the extra dough). EA Access now costs S$6.45 a month, but the library is limited to EA games.

The news joins the announcement that Microsoft has renamed Xbox’s live-streaming service Beam to Mixer. The rename comes with tons of additional features.
