Media preview: STGCC 2016 goes local with artists and food

Earlier on Thursday, the Singapore Toy, Game and Comic Convention (STGCC 2016) held a media preview for the show taking place this weekend (Sep 1o to 11). At the preview, overseas guests Nick Spencer, Emma Rios, Hwei Lim and Jon-Paul Kaiser were present to give a taste of what to expect at this year’s show. But not to be outdone were local artists Rachta Lin, Daniel Yu, Andy from Andimoo Studio; and Xuan Ming from Xmashed Gear who were there to represent Singapore.
Nice that #STGCC2016 #MediaPreview showcases local artists and exhibitors first! @AndimooComics represent! pic.twitter.com/rgJtEiZr8S

So it was cool to see the preview start off with a spotlight on local artists, something that hasn’t really been done in previous years. The artists touched on the local creative scene and what inspires them. Andy even touched on Singapore’s recent historic Olympic gold, saying that Singapore needs more Joseph Schoolings in the art world to inspire another generation of creators. You can also check out Rachta’s artwork in the gallery at the end of the article.

Next, overseas stars Nick Spencer, Emma Rios, Hwei Lim and Jon-Paul Kaiser stepped into the spotlight to speak on “How important is pop culture in current society?” The stars also touched on their inspiration, with Spencer citing Keith Giffen and Brian Bendis as his inspiration to be a comic book creator. Emma’s inspiration as a 14-year-old? Legendary Katsuhiro Otomo’s Akira.

The stars also got a taste of Singapore’s food. Hwei Lim, who’s from Malaysia, probably has tasted something similar before (no kidding), but she was more than game to play along.
Artists Rachta, Jon-Paul, Emma and Hwei Lim also got a bit of time to show off their skills.
MERCH, MERCH, MERCH
And it wasn’t all about the people: The guys from STGCC showed off all the various merchandise on display. It’s hard to list them all down here, so just take a look! Included are the show exclusives, such as Marvel Tsum Tsum #1 and the STGCC x Tokidoki Lanyard.
STGCC will be held in Sands Expo & Convention Centre, Level B2, Halls E & F from Sep 10 to 11.
