Cosplay STGCC 2014

Each year, the Singapore Toy, Game and Comic Convention (STGCC) attracts hundreds of cosplayers and this year was no exception.

What seems to have set this year apart, however, was the sheer explosion of “Western” cosplays, as well as an increase in the number of cosplayers from the region. Singapore was more than well represented, of course, but there were definitely a significant number of visitors from Malaysia and even Australia!

The cosplays that we saw were pretty diverse too, and not surprisingly, it was characters from recent box office hits like Frozen, Maleficent, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and of course, Guardians of the Galaxy that dominated at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre.

Check out the rest of our cosplay STGCC 2014 pics under the cut, and find out who we personally felt the best cosplayer of the weekend was. (HINT: We’re a little biased.)

Day 1 was the unofficial “Marvel Day”, so naturally we were really happy to see some of our favourite characters represented.

The Marvel cosplay group shot, of course, was one of the main hits of the day, and we were lucky to be able to get a shot of it, amidst the crowd of photographers. Special kudos to the She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel and Hellcat cosplayers – I believe they are the first to ever cosplay these characters in Singapore!

Of course, you already know who we thought was the best cosplayer of Day 1. But we’ll showcase her here again, just because we can.

Day 2 was “DC Day” and while we at HereBeGeeks.com are HUGE Marvel fans, it was clear that most of the cosplayers who showed up on Sunday were predominantly DC fans! This gallery features cosplayers from Singapore, Malaysia and even Evey Dantès from Australia!

We’ll take a breather from Marvel and DC to acknowledge the amazing Star Wars cosplayers from the 501st Legion and beyond!

With Humberto Ramos here in Singapore for the first time, it was not surprising that many took the opportunity to cosplay as Spider-Man, but we were just as thrilled to see a couple of Scarlet Spiders too, both the Ben Reilly costume as well as the current Kaine costume.

But surprise, surprise, there was Gwen Stacy, Spider-Woman from the upcoming Edge of Spider-Verse storyline! The guy next to her was so excited to see her he couldn’t stop grinning. Heh.

Not to be outdone, of course, Cameron Stewart had his fair share of cosplay fans, who had put together the new Batgirl of Burnside costume he designed. Needless to say, he was very happy to meet them.

Comics aside, the movies were well represented too, both animated and live-action alike! There were at least two pairs of Elsa and Anna from Frozen, two Maleficents, and a Jack Frost from Rise of the Guardians! A Spartan from 300 showed up too – we have yet to find out who he is! – and MovieMania’s Reno Tan wore the demonwolf armour from Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

Not to be outdone, the games were represented by an awesome Mass Effect team and Elizabeth from BioShock Infinite.

But most of all, cosplay this year was definitely for the kids! Parents, you’re doing it right!

So, you’ve seen all the photos, it’s time to reveal what we thought the best cosplay was, and we did say earlier that we were biased. That’s because we never expected to actually see a SHAUN OF THE DEAD cosplay in Singapore! Take a bow, sir! (Or, you know, a cricket bat.)

Peter Lin

His teenage years spent nursing a giant man-crush on Steve Rogers, the first Captain America, Peter naturally found himself drawn to many other heroes who depicted strong, manly qualities, including the honour-bound warrior Worf, first Klingon in Starfleet, and the muscular rock hard abs of The Thing.
