San Diego Comic-Con

Who’s Your Daddy! (Part I)

We’re at San Diego Comic-Con and are excited as heck for the next four days. Now there’s an interesting trend through the many stories that will unveil over the next few days here, and it’s something I think pop culture has downplayed or misrepresented in the past. Fatherhood. Yet, it’s heartening to see so many potential role models for fathers in the near future. I’ll just run down a non-exhaustive list, based on the few panels I hope to attend.

Tron: Legacy is, when you get past all the hype and the Avatar-challenging special effects, essentially about a son’s search for his missing father. Jeff Bridges reprises his role of Kevin Flynn from the original 1982 movie, who suddenly disappeared altogether, leaving behind a young son. Two decades later, his son is ready to discover that his father has been trapped inside the same cyberworld he created. The panel is tomorrow at 11.15am in Hall H.

Stargate: Universe ended its debut season with a huge cliffhanger. Alaina Huffman’s character, the pregnant medic TJ is shot and falls to the ground, bleeding profusely. The catch, her child’s father is Colonel Everett Young, the ship’s commanding officer. Both Young and TJ knew that having the baby would change their relationship permanently, and though Young was actually looking forward to the birth, TJ was extremely aghast at having to raise a child in such an alien environment. The panel is Friday at 10.30am in Ballroom 20.

The Cape is an upcoming superhero television series from NBC about a good cop, Vince Faraday, who is framed for a series of crimes. He goes into hiding and is trained by a mysterious benefactor, before become the costumed vigilante, The Cape, based on his son’s comic book hero. His son is Faraday’s reason to keep fighting crime, albeit in an alter ego. The panel is Friday at 2.15pm in Room 6A.

The Green Hornet is a movie remake of the classic television series. Starring Seth Rogen as the titular hero, the remake focuses on the Hornet’s origins as the playboy Britt Reid and his quick sobering up after the murder of his father (played by Tom Wilkinson). The elder Reid used his connections as a media mogul to combat crime lords, and soon the son realises it is his destiny to do the same, albeit in his own style. The Sony Pictures panel includes Will Ferrell’s “The Other Guys” and Paul Bettany’s “Priest” and is on Friday at 4.00pm in Hall H.

Batman: Under The Red Hood is the latest animated blockbuster from the genius of Bruce Timm and co. A strange twist of the father-son relationship finds Batman contemplating his choice to take on a sidekick. Following the 1995 “Under the Hood” story arc by the talented Judd Winick, this dark adventure pits the Batman against one of his most dangerous enemies – dangerous because of how strangely familiar he is with the Batman! Along with his first protege, Dick Grayson aka Nightwing, Batman must race to uncover the identity of the Red Hood. The World Premiere of this direct-to-video film will be held Friday, 8pm in Ballroom 20.

Peter Lin

His teenage years spent nursing a giant man-crush on Steve Rogers, the first Captain America, Peter naturally found himself drawn to many other heroes who depicted strong, manly qualities, including the honour-bound warrior Worf, first Klingon in Starfleet, and the muscular rock hard abs of The Thing.
