In what is possibly the most exciting news tonight, DC Comics’ Doctor Fate is set to get an ongoing title again, with art from Singapore-based artist Sonny Liew and words by DC Comics president Paul Levitz, who we last saw in Singapore in 2011 at the Singapore Toy Game and Comic Convention.
It’s currently unclear if the new series for magic-wielding Doctor Fate will feature a new Dr Fate or the recent Khalid Ben-Hassin incarnation. Still, the title will be part of a slate of new titles and creative teams from DC Comics in June that aims to “ensure there is a comic book for everyone”. Doctor Fate will be among the 24 brand-new titles to be released, which will join another 25 ongoing titles. New titles include Batman Beyond by Dan Jurgens and Bernard Chang, Black Canary by Brenden Fletcher and Annie Wu, Constantine: The Hellblazer by Ming Doyle and Riley Rossmo, and Dark Universe by James Tynion IV and Ming Doyle.
But that’s not all the good news from Sonny – the start of his work on Doctor Fate also means he’s wrapping up his work on the long-delayed The Art Of Charlie Chan Hock Chye, now set for an early 2015 release in the region from Epigram Books, and later in the US and UK in what is a huge deal with Pantheon Books.
Sonny’s most recent work includes Warm Nights Deathless Days: The Life of Georgette Chen, and superhero comic Shadow Hero with writer Gene Luen Yang (who’s going to be writing Superman with John Romita Jr as part of the June releases), and both these titles are definitely worth getting, while we wait for June to come. Make sure you add Doctor Fate to your pull list first anyway!
And yes, that Shadow Hero sequel will have to wait.
